APPLE AND BEAUTY
In Greek and Roman art, the goddesses often hold an apple. As attribute of Aphrodite-Venus, the apple became symbol of beauty, pleasure and love. Indeed, the apple is for centuries an effective beauty product.

Cooked with animal grease, apples were added in the preparation of an ointment used for hydrating and softening chapped lips and hands. This preparation was called Pomata to underline the apple addition (in French, apple is said « Pomme »). Thereafter, Pomata became “pommade” (French word for ointment). This term “pommade” still remains, even if today the ointments do not contain systematically apple in their composition. The apple juice, peels and slices of pulp have a tonic effect on the skin. These ingredients were traditionally used to improve skin firmness, and to prevent wrinkles, cellulite or stretch marks. |
Against the sunstrokes, an apple crushed or cooked in its juice mixed in equal part with olive oil was traditionally employed. This preparation was applied locally during one night. It was very effective on sun burns.
