Oxygen is essential for life. Without oxygen, there is no respiration, no transformation of the nutrients into energy, then no life.
But the normal cellular metabolism generates very reactive oxygenated molecules, harmful for the organism. Moreover, the body is continuously exposed to oxidant factors generated by industrial pollution, sun, ozone, smoking, alcohol…

Our own antioxidant system of defence protects us against the majority of these endogenous and exogenous attacks. But the uncontrolled increase of free oxygenated radicals can overflow our natural antioxidant defences and increase the degradation of lipids, proteins and DNA. This phenomenon is called “oxidative stress”. Damages caused by free radicals relate to the whole organism (interior and peripherals tissues). |
Initially cosmetic industry was only interested in visible, i.e. the body aesthetic aspect and oxidation of tissues (especially for skins highly exposed to exogenous oxidants). But a clear link was also established between oxidative stress and degenerative diseases. With age, damages caused by oxidative stress generate chronic degenerative diseases (cardiovascular diseases, cancer…).
